Aquatic Physical Therapy

Aquatic physical therapy is a specialized form of rehabilitation that takes place at the Fidalgo pool, using the natural properties of water to enhance movement and healing. The buoyancy of the water reduces stress on joints, while its resistance helps strengthen muscles without the impact of traditional land-based exercises. This makes it ideal for individuals with arthritis, back pain, post-surgical recovery, or mobility limitations.

Aquatic therapy can help improve strength, flexibility, balance, and coordination in a low-impact environment. It is especially beneficial for those who struggle with weight-bearing activities on land, offering a safe, supportive space to perform exercises with reduced pain and risk of injury.

Guided by a skilled physical therapist assistant, aquatic therapy combines the benefits of water with targeted exercises to promote recovery, increase range of motion, and improve overall function. Whether recovering from an injury, managing chronic pain, or improving fitness, aquatic physical therapy is an effective and soothing approach to rehabilitation.

Orthopedic/Sports Injury Rehabilitation

Whether you are suffering from a sprain, strain or other injury,  our therapists will discuss with you the nature of the problem,  examine symptomatic tissues, search for faulty biomechanics, pinpoint strength deficits, assess neuromuscular control, and identify movements or postures that increase or decrease the pain.

Spinal Stabilization Training

The mechanics of the spine and the potential causes of back pain are often misunderstood. We take the time to explain your condition and educate you about how your back works. You will also learn to incorporate proper body mechanics and postural awareness during your work/home activities. Once back pain sets in, the muscles used to stabilize the segments of the spine become inhibited or hyperactive. By following a specific stabilization program, you can learn how to effectively activate these muscles and strengthen/balance the muscles stabilizing the segments of your spine. This will assist greatly in eliminating back pain.

Surgical and Fracture Rehabilitation

Surgical intervention may be required for complex injuries. To ensure a successful outcome, progressive rehabilitation is often necessary to promote tissue healing and achieve functional goals.

Vestibular/BPPV Vertigo Treatments

Do you have dizziness associated with position changes, particularly turning your head or moving in/out of bed? If symptoms last 60 seconds or less per episode, this may be something called Benign Paroxymal Positional Vertigo (BPPV). Our therapist will ask detailed questions and complete a thorough evaluation to confirm the cause and help improve the symptoms.

Balance & Gait Training

After an illness or injury, many people experience problems with their balance, or instability while walking. At Coupeville Physical Therapy we will perform a thorough evaluation to reveal the severity of the problem, and create a personalized treatment plan for you.

You may be put through a series of balance tests in order to proceed with the best course of rehab. If safety is an issue the therapists may recommend the use of an assistive device, at least for a time, in order to decrease the risk of falling. Proper training with use of the assistive device is essential for your safety!

Treatment Modalities

Your treatment program may consist of proven modalities (e.g. heat, ultrasound, electrical stimulation, ice, and traction) to control your pain and/or muscle spasm, joint and/or soft tissue mobilization to help hydrate and restore circulation to the involved area, taping to support injured joints and therapeutic exercises designed to enhance the healing process and strengthen/balance the muscles in the involved area.

Sports and Kinesiology Taping

Kinesiology taping is used to support and stabilize muscles and joints. It can help provide postural support, as well as increased stability to weakened or injured muscles and joints, reducing pain and helping to prevent further injury.
